Tioga is a community in Northwestern North Dakota with about 1200 people. It is famous for being the first place in North Dakota where they found oil. Some of the major challenges that Tioga has today is that it has had a population growth that its city was not prepared for due to the oil boom. This is a less known but ever so real problem that many rural communities also face- “Population Overgrowth.”

Today we visited Tioga where we helped collect oral histories while another part of our class helped clean up the Norsemen Museum. We collected oral histories at the senior center. I was very impressed by what a popular hangout this place seemed to be among the residents of Tioga. This seemed to be a large asset that the community has, because hangouts like these are a greet gathering place for communities to have to not only socialize but discuss whatever issues need to be addressed.

  1. Thank you for this opportunity to be a part of your tour and the exchange
was great. We learned from you as well and enjoyed having the group.
