Priscilla Day 2 – Watford City

In Uncategorized on March 14, 2012 at 1:03 pm

Today I learned about how the booming population in Watford City, North Dakota due to the increase in oil industry has heavily affected the community both positively and negatively. For example, one of the major issues the city is trying to deal with is housing. There is not enough housing for all of the workers which leads some people to living out of their cars or on ‘man camps.’ The stores and services in town are also affected because they do not have enough workers in order to fill the demand from the locals and oil workers. Schools are bursting at the seams with students, and the infrastructure quality is depleting.

Although there are various negatives in this situation, there are also extreme positives. Many people have traveled across the country to get jobs in this small city and have earned their fist pay checks in years. Also, this increase in population has helped local businesses immensely. The money local businesses have earned from this boom has inspired them to give back to their community by building a new wellness center, theater and restaurant.

While driving down the enchanted highway, I learned about one man’s passion for his own rural community. Gary Greff has put a lot of effort into making sure people know about his small town by creating the enchanted highway and soon to be enchanted castle.
