Tiffani’s Post: Day #2

In Uncategorized on March 13, 2013 at 8:43 pm

Today was our second day on the Stone Soup Tour. We woke up in Edinburg and went to tour the community center and the grocery store. Our next stop was Fort Totten after stopping for lunch in Devils Lake. Here in Fort Totten the main connection is the tribe, this is a large part of the community and the culture here. Having this stop be on a reservation really gave me an insight into the differences of living here. This is a dry reservation and we have been talking about how this is both good and bad. On one hand it is meant to keep the already high alcohol and substance abuse down, but on the other they are missing out on all of that revenue that could be generated from alcohol sales. Service in the community here I think is seen when you look at the newer projects and building such as the jail and the senior center. I am not really sure who all participates in the service here but it is something I would like to learn more about. The main asset here is the casino. We learned that 25% of the profits go to tribal and state improvement. This is split evenly between the two. So far a good day here and hopefully only going to get better.
